Android Studio on Windows, Mac or Linux

  1. Install Android Studio; it bundles the JDK, SDK and emulator
  2. SDK Manager → install the latest stable platform and build tools
  3. Device Manager → create an emulator (enable hardware acceleration in BIOS/UEFI for speed)
  4. Real device: Settings → About phone → tap Build number seven times → Developer options → USB debugging
  5. Create an upload key for signing and back it up securely — losing it makes publishing updates painful

Android apps can be built on Windows, Mac or Linux. A Linux workstation is comfortable for Android and server work — see our Linux and Bash courses.
